Here are some of the actions to be followed, to secure your Instagram account if you think yoy’re account has been hacked:
Your account represents you, so only you should have access to your account.
What to do if someone gains access to your account or you cannot log into your account?
Here are some of the actions to be followed, to secure your Instagram account if you think your account has been hacked:
Check your email account for a message from Instagram
If you have received an email from security@mail.instagram.com stating that your email address was changed, you may be able to undo this change by selecting revert this change in that message.
If additional information was also changed (e.g. password) and you cannot change your email address back, request a login link or security code from Instagram.
How to request a login link from Instagram?
To request a login link:
- On the login screen, click Get help logging in (for Androids) or Forgotten password (for iPhone).
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number linked with your account, then click Next.
Note: If you forgot the username, email address or contact number associated with your account, click Need more help? Below the Next button and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Tap on either your email address or phone number, then select Send login link.
- Tap the login link in your email or text message and follow the on-screen instructions.
How to request a security code or support from Instagram?
- From the login link screen, click Need more help?, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Select either your email address or phone number, then tap on Send security code.
- If you don’t receive a security code, click I can’t access this email address or phone number below Send the security code, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Make sure you enter a secure email address that only you can access. Once you have submitted your request, you should receive an email from Instagram with the next steps.
Verify your identity
If you have submitted a support request for an account without photos of you, you should obtain an auto-response email from the support team. They will ask you to help them verify your identity by providing the email address or phone number that you signed up with and the type of device that you used at the time of sign-up (e.g. iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.).
If you request support for an account with photos of you, you will be asked to put up with a video selfie of you turning your head in different directions to help them check that you're a real person and confirm your identity.
Once you've submitted the video selfie to help them verify your identity, you'll receive an email from Instagram at the secure email address that you provided.
If Instagram cannot confirm your identity from the video that you submitted, you can submit a new video, and it will be reviewed again.
If you're still able to log in to your Instagram account
If you think that your account has been hacked or an attempt to hack your account has been made, and you're still able to log in, there are things that you can do to help keep your account secure:
- Change your password or send yourself a password reset email.
- For additional security, turn on two-factor authentication.
- Ensure that your phone number and email address in account settings are correct.
- Check Accounts Centre and remove any linked accounts that you don't recognise.
- Revoke access to any suspicious third-party apps.
