Western Digital advises customers to update their WD My Cloud devices to the latest firmware version to keep receiving security updates.

“On April 15, 2022, support for prior generations of My Cloud OS, including My Cloud OS3, will end. If your device isn’t compatible with My Cloud OS5, you will lose remote access and only be able to access it locally. Devices on these older firmware versions will not receive security fixes or technical support.” said the company.

Western Digital instructs customers to protect their data from attackers after the firmware is no longer supported by backing up their devices, disabling remote access, disconnecting it from the internet and choosing a strong password.

Starting from January 15, 2022, customers using My Cloud OS5 compatible devices will no longer support previous generations of the My Cloud OS.

Compatible devices must be upgraded to My Cloud OS5 to allow remote access to their device as security updates, and technical support will no longer be provided for My Cloud OS3 firmware

“My Cloud OS5 is a major and fundamental security release that provides an architectural revamp of our older My Cloud firmware and adds new defences to thwart common classes of attacks. We recommend that all users upgrade to My Cloud OS 5 as soon as possible to benefit from the latest security fixes. My Cloud OS3 will not receive these security fixes.” reads the announcement published by Western Digital.
