According to Justice Department officials, the breach was carried out through ransomware on February 17 and was a major incident.
The affected system held sensitive law enforcement data, including legal and administrative information, as well as “personally identifiable information pertaining to subjects of US Marshals Services investigations, third parties and certain USMS employees,” said USMS spokesperson Drew Wade, chief of the Office of Public Affairs.
The infection occurred on February 17, 2023, and once discovered, the Marshals Service disconnected the system from the network.The Department of Justice is conducting a forensic investigation.
The Marshals Service officials race to reduce the risk posed by the theft of extremely sensitive personal and investigative information while the department looks into the attack's origin and attempts to quantify the damage.
