Underwriters Laboratories (UL) hit by a ransomware attack that caused them to shut down their systems while they recover.
UL is a global certification company headquartered in the United States, with 14,000 employees and maintains offices across 40 countries.
Have you ever thought about why brands need certifications when seeing a logo on a product?
UL markers are mostly seen in home appliances and industrial equipment. These include fuses, electrical panels, TV remote, laptop or even Apple USB charger.
When companies release new products, they generally submit them to UL for testing and certified under nationally recognised safety and sustainability standards. Based on what tests were conducted and their results, the product will receive varying UL certifications.
BeepingComputer reported that last weekend Underwriters Laboratories was hit by a ransomware attack that encrypted their devices in their data centre.
The company immediately shut down its systems to prevent further spread of the attack.
UL told employees not to contact the threat actors or visit any sites related to the ransomware operation.
A source familiar with the attack reported that UL has decided not to pay the ransom instead restore from backups.
The myULclient portal remains offline with a message stating, “due to a system outage, myUL is unavailable.”
BleepingComputer stated that UL confirmed the attack occurred on February 13 and is currently analysing the attack.
It is unclear what ransomware operation is behind the attack and whether any unencrypted files are stolen.
