  • Kojima Industries, which produces plastic, metal and electronic components, reported that it was hit by a cyberattack.
  • It is unclear who may be responsible for the suspected attack.

Toyota reported that it will halt operations at domestic factories after one of its key suppliers was hit by a potential cyber attack.

Toyota stated that the incident caused the suspension of the operation of 28 production lines in 14 plants in Japan.

In a statement on Monday, Toyota apologised to its suppliers and customers for the inconvenience and blamed a "system failure" at a domestic supplier, Kojima Industries Corporation.

The expected impact is a 5% drop in Toyota’s monthly production in Japan, which translates to roughly 13,000 units.

Toyota’s subsidiaries Daihatsu Motors and Hino Motors will also halt production but the exact impact on them hasn’t been clarified.

Although Kojima has not disclosed any official information about the attack, the company's website is currently down and many Japanese news outlets are claiming that the disruption is a direct result of a cyberattack.

It is still unclear who is behind the attack or motive. The attack comes just after Japan joined Western allies to clamp down on Russia after it invaded Ukraine.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said his government would investigate the incident and whether Russia was involved.

"It is difficult to say whether this has anything to do with Russia before making thorough checks," he told reporters.
