The Canadian government has ordered the dissolution of TikTok Technology Canada following a detailed review that identified the company as a national security threat.
The decision was made with input from Canada’s security and intelligence agencies, as well as other government partners. However, it does not impose a ban on Canadian users accessing TikTok or prevent them from creating and sharing content on the platform.
“As a result of a multi-step national security review process, which involves rigorous scrutiny by Canada’s national security and intelligence community, the Government of Canada has ordered the wind up of the Canadian business carried on by TikTok Technology Canada, Inc. The government is taking action to address the specific national security risks related to ByteDance Ltd.’s operations in Canada through the establishment of TikTok Technology Canada, Inc. The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada’s security and intelligence community and other government partners.” reads the statement published by Canadian Government.
Canada's announcement reassures the public that they can still use TikTok if they choose to, as the closure of the platform's offices in the country does not affect users .
“The government is not blocking Canadians’ access to the TikTok application or their ability to create content. The decision to use a social media application or platform is a personal choice.”
In February 2023, the Canadian government announced a ban on the TikTok app from all government-issued devices due to security concerns.
However, the announcement references a user data safety guide from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, which advises users to consider the following:
- Review the app's terms and privacy policy to assess its trustworthiness and safety.
- Ensure the app provides strong privacy settings, visibility controls, and robust authentication features.
- Limit app permissions, such as access to precise location and the camera, and be mindful of the information you share.
- Investigate where the app stores user data and familiarize yourself with the privacy laws in those regions.
