T-Mobile has announced that it has suffered a security breach exposing personal details of over 2 million customers. On August 20 the company announced that their cyber-security team discovered unauthorized access to their system and shut down it immediately. The leaked information includes name, billing zip code, phone number, email address, account number and account type (prepaid or postpaid). The company also said no financial data (including credit card information, social security numbers or passwords were compromised in the breach. “On August 20, our cyber-security team discovered and shut down an unauthorized access to certain information, including yours, and we promptly reported it to authorities. None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised.” said in the post published by the company. According to Motherboard, the incident happened on early morning August 20th when hackers accessed company servers through an API. The same day the company’s cybersecurity team detected the intrusion and shutdown it. The company did not reveal the exact number of people who were affected by the breach. T-Mobile said that they informed the authorities about the incident and they have started notifying customers who were affected by the breach directly via text message. Customers also can dial 611 from their device if they have any queries regarding the incident. “We take the security of your information very seriously and have a number of safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access. We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.”
