Forward Air disclosed a data breach after a ransomware attack in 2020 that allowed threat actors to access employee’s data.
Forward Air learned of suspicious activity on December 25, 2020, that occurred within certain computer systems. Forward Air immediately launched an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the attack.
“The investigation determined that certain Forward Air systems were accessible in November and early December 2020 and that certain data, which may have included your personal information, was potentially viewed or taken by an unknown actor," reads a data breach notification sent to Forward Air employees.
The stolen data includes employee names, addresses, date of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and passport numbers.
In its fourth-quarter financial results, the company said that the ransomware attack had cost it $7.5 million from lost revenue. Although the company never disclosed the form of ransomware attack, it is believed to have involved the Hades ransomware from the Evil Corp cybercrime group.
While there is no evidence that the data has been misused, the company offers potentially affected employees free credit monitoring service protection.
There is no way to specify if a threat actor has used stolen data; even if they assure not to after a ransom payment, all affected employees should presume that their data has been compromised.
