Sequoia Capital disclosed a data breach where the intrusion occurred after a successful phishing attack against one of its employees.

The company notified its investors that an unauthorised third-party had access to their personal and financial information.

Sequoia Capital notified its investors on Friday that some of their financial and personal information may have been accessed by a third party after an employee’s email was phished.  

The attackers couldn't gain access to other resources or assets on the company’s network.

While the threat actors could breach the employee’s mailbox, the VC firm admitted that it might have allowed the attackers to exfiltrate impacted individual’s information.

“Our security team responded promptly to investigate, and we contacted law enforcement and engaged leading outside cybersecurity experts to help resolve the issue and maintain the ongoing security of our systems,” reported Axios.

 “We have made considerable investments in security and will continue to do so as we work to address constantly evolving cyber threats.”

Sequoia Capital has notified the impacted individuals and offers 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection through Experian.

The company has hired external security experts to investigate the incident and informed relevant law enforcement authorities.
