KP Snacks, UK’s largest crisp manufacturer, was hit by a ransomware attack, causing severe disruption to retail supplies.
Kenyon Produce (KP) Snacks includes popular brands such as McCoy’s, PopChips, Hula Hoops, Skips, Wheat Crunchies, Penn State pretzels etc.
KP said that on Friday, 28 January, after an initial investigation of an IT outage, it was able to confirm that its systems had been compromised by ransomware.
According to Bleeping Computer, the Conti ransomware gang has taken responsibility for the attack and claims to have stolen credit card statements, spreadsheets with employee addresses and phone numbers, birth certificates, confidential agreements and other sensitive documents, samples of which it has published online.
Conti has given KP Snacks 5 days to negotiate before starting to leak information on their public blog. It is not clear if KP is negotiating with the threat actors, though it has bought in “legal notice”.
“As soon as we became aware of the incident, we enacted our cyber security response plan and engaged a leading forensic information technology firm and legal counsel to assist us in our investigation," said a spokesperson. "Our internal IT teams continue to work with third-party experts to assess the situation."
