Cencosud, the largest retail company in Chile, suffers a cyberattack by Egregor ransomware operators impacting the company's services.

Cencosud, the largest retail company in Chile, suffers a cyberattack  by Egregor ransomware operators impacting the company's services.

The Chilean-based multinational company has 1,40,000 employees and $15 billion in revenue for 2019. Cencosud has stores across Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Peru, including Easy home goods, Paris department stores and Jumbo supermarkets.

The ransomware attacked encrypted devices of Cencosud through their retail outlets and impacted the company’s operations.

The Argentinian publisher Clarin reports that retail stores are still open. Still, some services are impacted and printers in multiple retail outlets in Chile and Argentina, such as Easy home good stores, began printing out ransom notes as devices are encrypted.

An Easy store in Buenos Aires is displaying a sign warning customers that they are not accepting the `Cencosud Card’ credit card, accepting returns, or allowing the pick up of web purchase due to technical problems.

According to BleepingComputer, the ransom note points out that it was conducted by Egregor and targeted the `Cencosud’ Windows domain.

“This function is a known "feature" of the Egregor ransomware software, which will automatically print ransom notes to attached printers after the files on a device have been encrypted. For network-wide attacks, this could potentially lead to thousands of ransom notes being printed throughout the organization,” states BleepingComputer.

Egregor is responsible for attacks on Ubisoft, Noble, Crytek and Barnes.
