The Swiss town Rolle disclosed a ransomware attack where threat actors compromised some administrative servers and exfiltrated sensitive data.

The municipal government in the town initially downplayed the incident, saying that attackers stole only a small amount of data and that all the data had been restored from backup copies.

Soon after the attack, the town administrative chief Monique Choulat Pugnale reported to the Swiss daily 24 Heures that “a weak attack” impacted email servers that “did not contain any sensitive municipal data.”

“Gigabytes of data stolen from Rolle’s Vaudois community and posted on the Darknet. But the city administration presumably knew nothing.” reported the website Remonews. “The community of Rolle VD, idyllically located on Lake Geneva, was hit by a massive data leak. The criminals have posted internal and confidential documents on Darknet, as research by Watson shows.”

According to the investigation disclosed by the Le Temps daily this week, the attack was detected on May 30; experts involved in the analysis clarified the documents as “personal and extraordinarily sensitive.”

Representatives of the Rolle municipality published a statement that admits that it “underestimated the severity of the attack” and the potential uses of the data.

The attack was directed by the Vice Society ransomware group, which hit Lake Geneva. Le Temps said its journalists had observed spreadsheets with data on all inhabitants.

Local media reported that compromised data contained names, addresses,  social security numbers, dates of birth, and residency permit information for non-Swiss nationals.

Le Temps daily added that the stolen data also include school records and information about children who had contracted Covid-19.
