Mint Mobile disclosed a data breach that allowed attackers to port several phone numbers to another carrier and access subscriber’s account information.

  • The company disclosed a data breach that exposed subscribers account data and ported phone numbers to another carrier. 
  • The data breach notification states that the attack took place between June 8 and June 10.
  • The attacker accessed subscribers personal data, including call history, names, addresses, emails and passwords.

Mint Mobile disclosed a data breach that allowed attackers to port several phone numbers to another carrier and access subscriber’s account information.

Mint Mobile is an American telecommunications company which sells mobile phone services and operates as an MVNO on T-Mobile’s cellular network in the United States.

Mint Mobile disclosed the breach via an email sent on Saturday to the affected customers.

“Between June 8, 2021, and June 10, 2021, a very small number of Mint Mobile subscribers’ phone numbers, including yours, were temporarily ported to another carrier without permission,” reads the data breach notification.

“While we immediately took steps to reverse the process and restore your service, an unauthorised individual potentially gained access to some of your information, which may have included your name, address, telephone number, email address, password, bill amount, international call detail information, telephone number, account number, and subscription features.”

The attack also ported the phone numbers for a small number of Mint Mobile subscribers to another carrierwithout the authorisation of the subscribers.

Mint did not disclose how the breach took place, but it is likely to compromise an application used by customer service agents.

The customers who have received the email are requested to change their account passwords and be alert to other accounts that use the phone number for two-factor authentication purposes.
