Cyberattack hits Red Cross where unknown intruders affected the personal data of around 515,000 highly vulnerable people.

The  ICRC states that the data originated from at least 60 different Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the world.

According to the humanitarian organisation, the attack has forced the Red Cross to shut down IT systems that support a program that reunites families separated by conflict, migration or disaster.

“Why they carried it out, we do have this appeal to make to them," reported Robert Mardini, International Committee of the Red Cross’s (ICRC) director-general.

"Your actions could potentially cause yet more harm and pain to those who have already endured untold suffering. The real people, the real families behind the information you now have, are among the world's least powerful. Please do the right thing. Do not share, sell, leak or otherwise use this data."

It is unclear who was accountable for the cyber incident on a Switzerland based contractor that stores data, and there has been no indication that the data has been leaked or shared publicly.
