Government officials, including Defence Ministry Officials, were targeted by a malicious web link sent on WhatsApp, SMS and email.
The message wanted officials to click on www.covid19india.in. to produce a digital certificate of COVID-19 inoculation.
The SMS, signed with an abbreviation “MoHFW” that expands to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, “as per directives of MoHFW, Confirm your COVID status on https://covid19india.in and generate your vaccination certificate”.
When clicked on the link, it directed users to a “@gov.in” website that resembled the official government website “mygov.in.” Users were asked to enter their official email and password on the fake page, the report stated.
In an email to a Defence Ministry official, a Google drive link was shared in the pretence that the information was being collected regarding post-vaccination measures to be followed by armed forces.
Some of the officials even received phone calls where the caller said he was calling from an Army Hospital and the official needed to update the vaccination status on a link being sent on WhatsApp.
The officials were warned not to click on the link as it was a phishing attempt to access official emails and correspondence, the report stated.
A considerable part of government offices is still working from home owing to COVID-19 restrictions.
