International law firm Seyfarth Shaw disclosed that it was the victim of `sophisticated and aggressive’ malware attack over the weekend. Later the firm confirmed it as a ransomware attack.
Seyfarth holds more than 900 lawyers across 17 offices, providing clients all around the world with litigation, advisory and transactional legal services. The company made over $700 million in gross revenue last year. Seyfarth has been consistently ranked as one of the most recommended law firms in BTI Consulting Group's Annual Survey of General Counsel.
The company’s monitoring system detected the unauthorised activity on October 10, 2020.
“We understand that a number of other entities were simultaneously hit with this same attack, ” reads the statement published by the company.
The IT team acted quickly to prevent the spread and protect its systems. There is no evidence that any client or firm data were accessed or removed.
“At this time, our email system remains down. Our phone system is still functioning.”
Many of the systems we're encrypted and shut down as a part of a precautionary measure.
The firm added up that an undisclosed number of companies was hit “simultaneously” by the same threat actors.
The firm said that it is coordinating with the FBI and working around to bring back the systems online as quickly and safely as possible.
“Our clients remain our top priority, and we will continue to do everything necessary to protect their confidential information and continue to serve them. We are coordinating with the FBI and are working around the clock to bring our systems back online as quickly and safely as possible” said Seyfarth Shaw.
