An Italian mobile operator, Ho Mobile, suffered a massive data breach where the threat actors stole the personal data of 2.5 million users.

On December 28, Bank Security researcher first brought the incident to limelight when a security analyst spotted the Telco's database for sale on a dark web forum.

Ho's statement confirms the security researcher's assessment that hackers broke into Ho's servers and is believed to have impacted around 2.5 million customers.

The operator reports that the threat actors stole details on Ho customers, including full names, email address, nationality, data and places of birth, contact numbers and home addresses. They also have the SIM Integrated Circuit Card Identification Number (ICCID) - a unique number providing the card’s country, home network and identification.

The Vodafone owned company posted a message on its official website about the incident and alert impacted customers through text.

Telco said that no financial data, call details, SMS and payment details were stolen by the breach.

The operators are minimising the impact of the breach by offering to replace SIM cards free of charge.

“Since the SIM card and customer details have been stolen and could be abused to request a SIM card change, physical presence in the Ho stores will be required, the company said, to avoid allowing hackers to request a SIM change for a legitimate customer via the phone,” stated ZDNet.

The company said that the investigation into the hack is still ongoing along with local law enforcement agencies.
