The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Sunday warned NHAI, IRC, and it's other wings to tighten their IT security systems.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Sunday warned NHAI, IRC, and it's other wings to tighten their IT security systems.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways receivedan alert from CERT-In regarding targeted intrusion activities directed towards Indian Transport sector with possible malicious intentions. The Ministry has advised departments and organisations under the transport sector to strengthen the security posture of their infrastructure,” said the Ministry in a statement.

The Ministry also stated that the NIC, National Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), Indian Road Congress (IRC), state PWDs, Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE),  testing agencies and automobile manufacturers have been instructed to perform the security audit of the entire IT system by CERT-In certified agencies.

The security audits are advised regularly, and actions to be taken as per their recommendations.

The audit report and the action taken report is to be submitted to the Ministry regularly.

Sources said that the transport sector has a vast database including vehicles, highway contractors and details of crucial projects.

“There have been regular intrusion attempts, and in several cases, it’s suspected that the trials are being made from China or Chinese hackers. We have been fighting this daily. All agencies have been asked to remain vigilant,” said an official.

Last year NHAI reported a cyberattack on its email server, and no data loss was recorded because of the immediate action taken by the authority.
