HCA Healthcare, a leading healthcare provider, announced a data breach that exposed the personal data of around 11 million patients.
On July 5th, 2023, DataBreaches.net reported that a threat actor had begun selling data on a forum that is allegedly from HCA Healthcare. The forum post comprised samples of the stolen database, which the threat actor claimed consisted of 17 files and 27.7 million database records.
The stolen data includes information used for email messages, such as reminders for patients to schedule appointments and education on healthcare programs and services. Upon learning of the incident, user access to the storage was disabled.
The data that have been confirmed as stolen in the breach include patient names, state, city, zip code, date of birth, email, telephone number, gender, patient service data, location and next appointment dates.
The investigation into the breach is still ongoing, and the exact number of affected individuals cannot be confirmed. According to an announcement from HCA Healthcare, they believe the list contains around 27 million rows of data, which may include information for approximately 11 million HCA Healthcare patients.
According to a statement from the company, they do not believe that clinical information, such as treatment, diagnosis, or condition; payment information, such as credit card or account numbers; or other sensitive information, such as passwords, driver’s license or social security number, were involved in the breach.
In the aftermath of the incident, the company issued a statement expressing assurance that more sensitive forms of data were not taken. However, cybersecurity experts often warn that the full impact of a breach is not always clear immediately. It is important to have continuous monitoring of the situation and assess any potential risks to personal information.
