The FBI confirmed that one of its email servers had been hacked, resulting in spam emails being sent to over 100,000 people.

The FBI confirmed security group Spamhaus’s report that many fake emails were sent in two waves from an address on the government’s Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal, which is used by various government agencies.

The emails warned receivers that their information might be under attack by Vinny Troia, famous hacker and owner of cybersecurity company Night Lion Security, in connection with notorious cybersecurity group TheDarkOverlord.

Some of the emails were sent in the name of the Homeland Security cyber threat detection group, and were headlined: “Urgent: threat actor in systems.”

Spamhaus warned recipients that they were the target of a “sophisticated” hacking attack from a known extortion gang.

Brian Krebs, an independent cyber security expert, said he, too, had received a fraud email from the FBI address, but with a different message.

“This is an ongoing situation, and we are not able to give any additional information at this time. The impacted hardware was taken offline quickly upon discovery of the issue. We continue to encourage the public to be cautious of unknown senders and instruct you to report suspicious activity,” it added.
