Dell has alerted its customers about a data breach following a claim by a threat actor stating they have obtained information for roughly 49 million customers.
As per Dell's statement, the data accessed by threat actors in the breach comprised names, physical addresses, and other details concerning Dell hardware and orders. It did not involve financial or payment data, email addresses, or phone numbers.
The company also mentioned that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies and a third-party forensic firm to investigate the incident.
Dell says its cybersecurity program is designed to limit risk to its environments, including those used by its customers and partners.
“Our program includes prompt assessment and response to identified threats and risks,” Dell Technologies said in the statement.
The emails were sent out shortly after a threat actor named Menelik publicly declared the breach on BreachForums. Menelik claimed access to data from 49 million customers and other information systems acquired from Dell between 2017 and 2024, which were being offered for sale.
“We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell.” reads a Dell data breach notification shared with BleepingComputer.
