Tampa General Hospital experienced a cyberattack that went undetected for 18 days but was stopped before data encryption.
Tampa General identified "unusual activity" on its computer systems on 31 May and realized an unauthorized user had access to the health system's data files for the three preceding weeks.
Tampa General Hospital is an acute care hospital that serves a 12-country area in Southern Florida, providing care to a population of over four million.
TGH states that information of up to 1.2 million people may have been compromised.
According to the hospital statement, TGH reported the event to the FBI and provided information to support its investigation of the criminal group responsible.
TGH explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumer’s names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, social security numbers, health insurance information, medical record numbers, patient account numbers, dates of service and limited treatment information used by TGH for its business operations.
However, the hospital's electronic medical record system was inaccessible. Tampa General's security system prevented the criminal group from executing a ransomware attack because it could not encrypt the data.
Upon completing its investigation, TGH sent out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.
