A cyberattack hit the US State Department, and notifications of a “possible serious breach” were issued, a Fox News reporter tweeted on Saturday.

It is still uncertain when the security breach was discovered, but analysts assume it took place a couple of weeks ago.

The journalists reported that the US state department's ongoing mission to evacuate Americans and allied refugees in Afghanistan has, however, not been impacted in any manner.

Without confirming any incident, a familiar source “told Reuters the State Department has not experienced significant disruptions and has not had its operations impeded in any way,” reported Reuters agency.

“The Department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected. For security reasons, we are not in a position to discuss the nature or scope of any alleged cybersecurity incidents at this time”, said a State Department spokesperson in a statement.

However, the Reuters news agency added that a "knowledgeable source", without confirming any incident, said that the US state department has not suffered significant disruptions and has not had its operations impeded in any way.
