On Monday, the Canadian branch of Amnesty International reported a sophisticated cyberattack linked to China.
The international human rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) says it first discovered the breach on October 5 after employees spotted suspicious activity on its IT infrastructure.
The organisation hired the cybersecurity firm Secureworks to investigate the source of the attack and protect its systems.
“The investigation's preliminary results indicate that a digital security breach was perpetrated using tools and techniques associated with specific advanced persistent threat groups (APTs)," said Amnesty International Canada.
Secureworks determined that tools, techniques and procedures indicated that the attack was linked to a suspected Chinese threat group.
Amnesty International Canada and Secureworks did not explain what led them to this conclusion with the human rights giant. They said the assessment was based “on the nature of the targeted information as well as the observed tools and behaviours, which are consistent with those associated with Chinese cyberespionage threat groups.”
