US bookseller Barnes & Noble confirmed cyberattack, which impacted Nook services and may have exposed some customer data.

US bookseller Barnes & Noble confirmed cyberattack, which impacted Nook services and may have exposed some customer data.

Barnes & Noble is the largest bookstore chain in the United States, with over 600 bookstores in fifty states. The bookseller also operated the Nook Digital, which is their eBook and e-Reader platform. Most stores sell books, magazines, DVDs, newspapers, graphic novels, games, toys, gifts, music, and Nook e‑readers and tablets.

The company sent an email to its customers early Thursday morning, explaining it was alerted on October 10 about a cybersecurity attack that accessed some of its corporate systems, such as the system that retains customer contact details.

“We write now out of the greatest caution to let you know how this may have exposed some of the information we hold of your personal details," the Barnes & Noble email stated.

The company pointed up that no credit card or financial information was compromised; however, billing and shipping addresses, customer email addresses and phone numbers may have been exposed

Barnes & Noble told customers and confirmed in a statement that it currently has no evidence the data was exposed, but “cannot at this stage rule out the possibility."

The impacted systems contained transaction history; thus, the information regarding the items purchased from the company may have been exposed as well.

The company tweeted on Wednesday that it was “continuing to experience a systems failure” impacting it's NOOK e-readers.

"We regret sincerely that in so acting we have caused disruption to our customers, especially those of NOOK," the company added.

Barnes and Noble said that it's been working with cybersecurity consultants since the attack and have been cautiously restoring its networks.
