U.S secret service has released a warning to financial institutions that several ATM jackpotting attacks have been reported in the United States for past few days.This is the first time ATM jackpotting threat has been reported in the U.S. it has been a major threat for Asian and European banks for a long time.ATM giant NCR Corp has released an advisory to their customers on this issue:“This represents the first confirmed cases of losses due to logical attacks in the US. This should be treated as a call to action to take appropriate steps to protect their ATMs against these forms of attack and mitigate any consequences.”According to Krebs on Security, the attackers are targeting stand-alone ATMs in the U.S using Ploutus.D jackpotting malware which was first spotted in 2013.
Read more on: Malware Discovered in the Digital Version of Trump book ‘Fire and Fury’They also added that “According to that source — who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak on the record — the Secret Service has received credible information that crooks are activating so-called “cash out crews” to attack front-loading ATMs manufactured by ATM vendor Diebold Nixdorf.”The secret service warned that over the past 10 days the attackers are targeting Opteva 500 and 700 series Dielbold ATMs by using Ploutus.D jackpotting malware.The ATM which are targeted are standalone ATMs situated in big-box retailers, pharmacies, and drive-thru ATMs.Diebold has released a security alert on this issue that “On the 26 of January we were informed by US authorities about potential Jackpotting attacks moving from Mexico to the United States within the next days”.The attackers were dressed as ATM technicians and had a laptop and mobile device with them. They use endoscope device to see the internal portion of ATM which helps them to attach the cord allowing them to connect their laptop to the ATMs system.After the malware is installed and the attackers can also control the ATM remotely and dispense cash.Both the authorities and ATM makers did not disclose how much cash been stolen or any victims have been identified or not.In the alert, it is also mentioned that all the ATMs running on Windows XP are still vulnerable and advised ATM operators to upgrade their systems to Windows 7 to avoid the threat.
